Seymour council accepts annual racial profiling report from police

Seymour — Police Chief Bryce Sawyer presented the city’s annual racial profiling report to the Seymour City Council on Jan. 15 and the council voted to accept it.

Chief Sawyer explained the report is compiled from traffic stop data and submitted to the state as required. "State law requires me to fill one out before March of every year," he said, adding that the department’s data showed no officer complaints for the reporting period.

Councilmembers asked clarifying questions about the scope of the report (it covers traffic stops only) and whether there had ever been complaints; Chief Sawyer said the department had not received a racial profiling complaint to his knowledge and noted prior complaint processes when relevant.

A motion to accept the report was moved, seconded and approved by the council.
