The Amador County Unified School District board approved updated policy and procedural guidance on short‑term independent study after staff explained recent state changes.
The revised policy reflects California rules that reduced the prior minimum absence requirement and permit short‑term independent‑study contracts to be entered retroactively within the same school year. Staff presented a standard operating procedure to help attendance clerks and teachers implement the change, including examples of time‑value calculations for attendance credit and timelines for teacher grading (TK–5: five days; grades 6–12: ten days).
Administrators emphasized that short‑term independent study remains voluntary and not a substitute for classroom instruction. They also reiterated that students with IEPs and 504 plans are eligible for short‑term independent study and cannot be denied access. Staff said the district’s auditors review independent study records and reconcile attendance and ADA claims; since 2022, the district has recouped an average of roughly $272,000 per year from completed independent‑study contracts.
The board voted to approve the updated policy and requested staff training to ensure consistent implementation across sites.
