Madeline Noel, speaking for the Haitian Mobilization Committee, asked the commission and audience to observe a moment of silence on Jan. 12 to mark the anniversary of the 7.0-magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti in 2010. She described the lasting humanitarian impact and said thousands remain displaced; she cited casualty estimates and displacement figures as part of her remembrance.
Noel described the committee’s recent Haitian Independence Arts and Culture celebration, which provided mental-health, housing, medical and educational resources, and she thanked supporters including Lauderhill Mall and members of the city administration. “It is collaboration. It is working together, and we look forward to the city to continue to work with us,” Noel said.
Lattie Guzang, speaking for CASA, announced the start of the CASA youth classic soccer competition Thursday through Sunday and said the event offers scholarship and scouting opportunities for youth. Guzang thanked city leaders for continued support and asked the commission for ongoing backing of CASA’s programs.
Why it matters: Community-organized cultural events and youth tournaments connect residents with social services and create opportunities for young people; local government support can be important to sustaining these programs.
