The Florence City Design Review Board on Tuesday approved an application to add signage at Pointer School, authorizing a second internally illuminated monument sign at the Pine Street corner, two non-illuminated wall identification signs and eight parking directional signs. Staff said the site is within the Arts & Culture Overlay District and is owned by the Florence District 1 School District.
"They're installing an internal illuminated monument sign and wall signs, but the wall signs are not illuminated," said a staff presenter, noting the new monument sign would match an existing sign on Palmetto and South Dargan. Kyle Jones, deputy superintendent for Florence Twin Schools, said the building recently opened as a magnet school and the monument sign would act as a 'bookend' to the corridor.
Debbie Jenkins of Tyson Sign Company described the proposed monument as matching the existing downtown sign and said the additional signs will aid wayfinding for visitors and event attendees. A board member moved to approve the application; another seconded and the board voted in favor. Staff said a certificate of appropriateness will be issued.
The decision covers siting and sign types; staff will oversee final permitting and installation compliance with the design standards in the overlay district. No appeals or conditions beyond standard permitting were recorded at the meeting.
