The Madera City Council accepted a certificate from the office of State Senator Anna Caballero recognizing Martin Luther King Jr. Day and unanimously approved a proclamation declaring January 2026 as National Mentoring Month.
Arturo, a staff member from Senator Anna Caballero’s office, read and presented a certificate of recognition to the city on behalf of the senator, telling the council the observance "recognizes the historical significance of doctor mother king Martin Luther King Junior and acknowledges his enduring legacy" and offered the certificate "on behalf of the office of Senator Anna Caballero."
The council also presented a proclamation recognizing National Mentoring Month and invited representatives from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central California to accept it. The mayor noted the organization’s regional role in mentoring and said the group has positively impacted more than 30,000 children and families in the Central Valley. A Big Brothers Big Sisters representative thanked the council for the recognition and emphasized the importance of mentorship.
Councilwoman Evans requested that the Martin Luther King Jr. proclamation be presented at the city’s MLK celebration on Sunday, noting Barbara Nelson was selected by the host committee as this year’s humanitarian; the council agreed to provide the proclamation at that event.
These recognitions were ceremonial; no formal council action beyond the proclamations was required.
