Student advisory members presented findings from a student focus group on the district code of conduct, stressing the need for clarity, consistency and improved family access to the rules.
Sydney McConnell (Riverdale High) and Claire (Cypress Lake High) said students repeatedly raised three themes: inconsistent enforcement across schools and grade levels; the code is long and written in technical language that is not student‑ or parent‑friendly; and positive reinforcement declines as students move into secondary grades. Sydney said students want “a firm threshold that shows a point where warnings have to end and where consequences have to begin.” Claire recommended using social media and school news to share short graphics and to reference the code during school programming so students and parents recognize expectations.
Board members asked how parents’ signatures and awareness are tracked. Staff replied that business intelligence contains trackers for parent sign‑offs and that the district is running projects to increase parent FOCUS account registration. Board members and students discussed incentives (e.g., homework passes or other rewards) to encourage parent engagement.
Staff said they will relay student recommendations to principals, consider quick‑reference materials (including translated versions) and emphasize consistent enforcement and support for teachers when consequences are applied.
