Board president rescinds committee assignments after attorney flags conflict; vice president reassigns chairs

During the Jan. 14 meeting the board president said he had asked the board attorney, Howard Long, to research permissible engagement after learning that an immediate relative was employed by the district. Citing case law that could preclude the president from making certain committee assignments, he said he would ‘‘cure it in accordance with Mr. Long’s legal advice’’ and formally withdrew his earlier selections for several committees.

The president specifically rescinded appointments for education, negotiations, operations, policy, human resources and technology committees and asked Vice President Sheryl Pitts to make the assignments. Vice President Pitts then announced committee chairs and membership for each committee, including Rebecca Nieves as education committee chair and John Shaw as negotiations chair.
