Lebanon, Mo. — Representatives from the regional defense-support organization (SOP) updated council on developments at Fort Leonard Wood and region-wide workforce trends.
The presenter (identified in the meeting as Dorsey) said the Army announced the new hospital at Fort Leonard Wood will open on April 7 and that a ribbon-cutting is anticipated March 31; he added congressional engagement helped avert earlier plans to downsize the facility. He also described a roughly $113,000,000 housing-improvement program on the installation and noted an inventory of about 1,806 sets of quarters with approximately 1,400 needing replacement.
The SOP briefing included a regional employment analysis produced by the Missouri Department of Economic Development that showed a decline in total employment across four counties between 2019 and 2024 and noted possible implications for Fort Leonard Wood staffing and civilian employment. The presenter emphasized that while there is large defense spending nationally, not all increases automatically translate into added resources at the installation.
Council thanked the presenters; staff and SOP emphasized continued coordination to support quality-of-life investments for service members and families across the region.
What happens next: SOP and city staff will continue to share updates and incorporate regional priorities into planning and advocacy.
