The Sylvania Schools Board of Education voted to submit a resolution to the Board of Elections to place a property tax levy on the May 2026 ballot.
During discussion, administration explained this was the board's required second resolution to move the levy forward and that the resolution, prior certification and related documents would be filed together with the elections office. Board members acknowledged community concerns and said they will provide additional information and be available to meet with residents about the proposal.
Resident Gary Schmidt spoke during public comment and said he opposes any levy. Schmidt told the board he has lived in the area 38 years and said school taxes represented roughly 49% of his semiannual tax bill, adding, “49% of what I pay for my taxes is over just for the schools.” The board did not directly dispute Schmidt's math during the meeting; members instead offered to meet with residents and provide more details about the levy plan and its timing.
After trustees discussed next steps, the board moved and approved the resolution to proceed. The motion was moved and seconded, followed by a roll call that recorded affirmative votes from the present trustees; the administration will file the packet with Lucas County Board of Elections per usual deadlines.
The board said more information about the levy's amount, specific uses, and exact election date will be provided in the coming weeks and invited residents to contact board members for details.
