District accepts nearly $198,000 USDA distance-learning grant to equip classrooms

District staff presented a USDA Rural Utilities Services distance-learning grant and asked the board to accept the award at the Jan. 12 meeting. Mike and Dr. Sederquist described the grant as a three-year award intended to strengthen distance-learning capabilities and community access to technology.

The award amount discussed was $197,669 with a district portion after expected reimbursements of $25,798. Staff told the board they planned to prioritize equipping second through fifth-grade classrooms with Chromebooks, charging carts and classroom-sized ViewSonic boards in the first year; subsequent years could fund community meeting-room technology and external monitors.

Board members asked how much classroom time students currently spend on Chromebooks and discussed the rationale for prioritizing devices for younger grades. The board approved acceptance of the grant and instructed staff to proceed with procurement and reimbursement filings.

Staff emphasized the phased approach: initial purchases will focus on student devices and classroom boards so equipment can arrive and be in classrooms before the next school year; other community and meeting-room items would be scheduled in later grant years.
