The Covington City Council voted on Jan. 13 to deny an application to rezone Lots 5 and 6 and a portion of the revoked alley in Square 2006 (zoning case 25-11-09) from CN (neighborhood commercial) to CR (regional commercial). The applicant had proposed a radio tower for the site.
Councilman Inman described the parcel as "right by the CVS off of 21st" and said the request sought a less-restrictive classification to accommodate the tower; he told the council that Planning and Zoning had previously voted the proposal down. A member of the public, Nicholas T. Fitzsimmons of 524 West 20th Avenue, told the council he believed the property was too small for the tower and suggested he might withdraw the application.
Inman said the council's "biggest concern, obviously, would be the location" given how close residents live to the site and moved to deny the rezoning. The motion to deny was seconded and a roll-call vote recorded 'Yes' votes from the council members present, resulting in denial of the rezoning request.
The council did not adopt the requested CR zoning and did not record any conditions or alternative approvals at the meeting. The zoning case is listed in the transcript as ZC 25-11-09 and the ordinance number on the agenda as 20-25-12-02. The applicant’s next steps (withdrawal, resubmission or appeal) were not recorded during the meeting.
