The Cape Coral Youth Council on Jan. 9 reviewed early results from a senior-led mental-health survey and outlined next steps to analyze and present findings to school and city officials.
Member Johnson told the council the Oasis High School survey, open in December, returned 213 responses. "We did receive 213 responses from Oasis High School," Johnson said, and she described plans to form a small committee to prepare charts and to identify representative open-ended answers for presentation.
Johnson said she will reach out to the superintendent and the school-board chair to request an opportunity to present the findings; she noted Lee County Schools expected to discuss the project at a Jan. 29 meeting. If approved, Johnson said she would then contact the five principals at the remaining targeted high schools to coordinate a broader rollout. The council discussed presenting preliminary results at the joint Youth Council–City Council workshop on March 3 and including more comprehensive data at the April quarterly report if additional school responses arrive.
Members agreed the survey results should inform two complementary activities: (1) a fact-finding presentation for the March joint workshop to engage council members and staff, and (2) subsequent outreach to school boards and principals to request placement on school-board agendas. Chair Skorzeck and Mrs. Griglin encouraged sending a concise set of research questions to guide the conversation with the city and the school district and asked members to submit two proposed workshop questions per topic by the upcoming Friday.
Next steps: Johnson and other members will prepare charts and selected open-ended excerpts, seek permission to present to school leadership (Jan. 29 Lee County Schools meeting pending), coordinate a joint presentation for the March 3 City Council workshop, and provide a fuller report at the April quarterly meeting if additional data are collected.
