Timnath accepts $275,000 federal grant to develop Safe Streets action plan

The Timnath Town Council on Jan. 13 approved a contract with Next Phase Engineering to develop a townwide Safe Streets safety action plan using a $275,000 federal grant.

Planner Kim told council the Safe Streets for All grant totals $275,000, with a federal share of $220,000 and a town share of $55,000. The consultant will build a GIS crash database, perform a high-risk network analysis, prioritize safety projects, develop an implementation roadmap and lead stakeholder engagement including a task force, project fair and council workshops. Kim said the work will begin after council approval in January 2026 with adoption and closeout expected in 2027.

Kim noted historical crash data in earlier municipal boundaries (2015–2019) that recorded 28 serious injuries and two fatalities; staff emphasized that some data are older and the consultant will integrate police and ITS data to obtain current, granular crash information. Council members asked whether the plan ties to recent traffic-signal and ITS work; Kim said signal data will be used to identify recurring incident types and inform targeted improvements such as timing changes, roundabouts or pedestrian interventions.

Bill Jenkins moved to approve the contract; the motion passed unanimously. The contract accepts the federal grant with the town committing the stated $55,000 local match. Staff invited council participation on the stakeholder task force and said a facilitated visioning session and additional council work sessions are planned.
