CRB authorizes staff to investigate costs for two memorial benches for Clemons and Hambrick

The board authorized its executive director on Jan. 19 to investigate the total cost and funding options for two memorial benches honoring Jacquees Clemons and Daniel Hambrick and to report back to the board.

Jill read a letter from Sheila Clemons Lee, mother of Jacquees Clemons, requesting a bench and proclamation to mark her son's death and the broader changes that followed. Jill explained the city had planted commemorative trees in March but that bench procurement and funding had stalled. "She would have to gather her own funding for it," Jill said, describing the Parks Department’s process and an estimated per‑bench cost of about $1,600.

Board member S4 moved that the executive director investigate total costs and present findings to the board; the chair seconded. The chair called the question: "All in favor?" Members replied "Aye." The chair announced the motion was adopted.

Members discussed possible budget line items (community outreach, promotion/advertising, or other professional services) that could cover the expense and asked staff to check Metro procedures for park memorials and any Parks Commission approval required. Staff said they would attempt to present cost estimates at the next full board meeting.

Next steps: the executive director will compile cost estimates and procedural requirements for procuring benches and report back to the board for a decision on whether to fund the benches from CRB line items or to pursue external fundraising.
