Parks & Recreation reports rising youth participation, new classes and two NRPA mini‑grants

The Twentynine Palms Parks and Recreation Department on Jan. 13 told the city council it has expanded programs and increased participation across youth activities.

The recreation division manager said the youth flag football league grew to 166 participants this season, an increase from 112 in 2024 after adding a 13–15 division. Youth basketball programs and the 60th annual youth basketball tournament are underway. Staff announced new programming — tumbling and dance for ages 2–16, prenatal and inclusive yoga, a Dungeons & Dragons club, and plans to reintroduce Lehi Mason Science programming.

The department received two mini‑grants from the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA), one of which — 'Walk With Ease' — is aimed at healthy aging. NRPA will also feature the department in a podcast and article scheduled for publication. The 2026 program and activity guide is available online and in printed copies.

Why it matters: Expanded programming and federal/state grants can increase community recreation access and improve health outcomes; higher youth participation suggests local demand for expanded age ranges and new classes.

Next steps: Staff will continue outreach, return with partnership proposals (including for junior tennis), and implement grant‑funded programs.
