Board weighs three 2026–27 calendar options, citing BOCES coordination and athletics

The Locust Valley Central School District board reviewed three draft calendars for the 2026–27 school year, discussing tradeoffs for BOCES program alignment and athletic schedules.

Option 1 aligns with BOCES: the superintendent's conference day would be Aug. 31 and the first student day Sept. 1, preserving traditions such as the Wednesday before Thanksgiving off and a four‑day Memorial Day weekend. Option 2 also aligns with BOCES but shifts the conference day to Sept. 1 and the first student day to Sept. 2, which would reduce the Memorial Day weekend to three days. Option 3 preserves a post‑Labor Day start (first student day Sept. 8) but would make the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Monday after Easter instructional days, and require that any snow-day makeups be handled through immediate remote instruction.

Trustees and administrators focused on practical impacts: coordinating with BOCES is important because many district students attend BOCES programs; starting earlier would mean athletics begin in August and students could be participating in sports before classes resume. Administrators said they would post the calendars on the district website, note clerical typos in drafts, and welcome public feedback before possible votes at upcoming meetings.

No final calendar decision was made. The board asked administration to clarify BOCES-specific dates and to provide a clearer summary of how each option would affect families and programs before the next meeting.
