The Atchison County Board of Commissioners completed its organizational work for 2026 on Jan. 13, confirming leadership, making committee appointments, updating financial designations and passing several administrative actions.
Commissioner Quinn was nominated and confirmed to continue as chairman and Commissioner Campbell was chosen as vice chairperson; both nominations were approved 3–0. The board voted to keep its existing Tuesday meeting schedule, with department-head time at 9 a.m. and regular meetings beginning at 10 a.m.
The commission designated the Atchison Daily Globe as the county's official newspaper for legal publications and named Exchange Bank and Trust, Union State Bank of Atchison, and UNB as eligible county depositories. Interim treasurer Paige Schmidt recommended naming Exchange Bank and Trust as the county's main depository; the board approved the recommendation.
Commissioners adopted a resolution waiving the audit gap for the 2026 audit; the resolution was assigned number 2026-1561. The board set elected-official salaries for 2026 as follows: County Attorney $115,360; Register of Deeds $63,653.94; County Clerk $70,711.58; County Treasurer $63,653.94 (plus motor vehicle line of $10,192); Sheriff $99,827.95; and commissioners $20,000 per district.
On a contested measure, the board voted 2 to 1 to rescind Charter Resolution 2018-01. The rescission changes how delinquent tax payments are applied, allowing payments to be applied to the oldest year rather than the most recent year, according to the discussion on the record.
All other routine appointments to regional boards and committees (Area Agency on Aging, Atchison Area Chamber of Commerce, community corrections advisory board, Northeast Kansas multi-county health department, NEKES regional board, Project Concern, Safety Committee, Solid Waste Advisory Board, EDAG, and AAEDC) were approved by unanimous votes during the organizational session.
