City manager lists capital projects, community programs and outreach events for 2026

Atascadero — City Manager Mister Lewis opened the council’s staff update on Jan. 12 with a slate of projects and community programs the city expects to advance in 2026.

Lewis told the council the city plans to tear down Fire Station 1 and begin construction of a new two‑story Station 1, remodel Fire Station 2 and renovate the police department to modernize public‑safety facilities. He said the city will complete phase 2 of the El Camino Real safety and downtown improvement project this year.

On community programming, Lewis announced the Wild Journeys nature play area at the Central Coast Zoo and thanked sponsors Service Systems America, El Camino Veterinary Hospital and the Central Coast Zoo Foundation. He also reminded residents that backyard burn season opens Jan. 12 and that permits are available online, promoted a 'coffee with a planner' outreach series to gather input on short‑term rentals and the general plan, and listed registration windows and dates for mother/son and father/daughter dances, spring youth tee ball (season Mar. 24–May 21), adult social kickball and a band concert series (application deadline Jan. 30).

Lewis urged residents to use the community center for ticket purchases and encouraged vendor applications for a new Lake Park weekend vending pilot (deadline Feb. 27) and for the upcoming Tamale Festival in May. He closed by inviting questions and reminding the council of the staff’s availability for follow up.
