Shawnee Mission board swears in members, adopts agenda and moves to executive session

The Shawnee Mission Board of Education opened its workshop with the Oath of Office for newly elected members led by Clerk of the Board Shelly Trenum and then moved through procedural business before recessing to executive session.

Clerk Shelly Trenum led newly elected or re‑elected members in the Oath of Office to support the U.S. Constitution and the Constitution of the state of Kansas and to faithfully discharge the duties of a board member for Unified School District 512.

The board adopted the meeting agenda as presented after a motion and the chair announced, "Motion passes 7 to 0." Later in the workshop the board approved the consent items (items 5.01 through 5.1); the motion was seconded by Jessica Hembry and the chair announced the motion passed (the transcript records the announcement as 'Motion passes seven‑two‑zero').

Before adjourning to executive session, a motion was made to enter executive session to discuss personnel under the non‑elected personnel exception; the motion set timing (a five‑minute break followed by a 15‑minute executive session with return at 7:30 p.m.) and invited Superintendent Dr. Schumacher and two staff members to attend. The chair announced the motion passed seven‑zero and the board recessed.

Because this was a workshop meeting, board members were reminded that action items are generally reserved for the regular board meeting; no final personnel action was reported following the executive session at this workshop. The board’s next regular meeting was announced for January 26.
