The School Committee conducted several policy actions and first/readings during its Jan. 12 meeting.
On motions and voice votes, the committee approved second readings to move forward with revisions to the school food and nutrition meal modifications policy, remove a redundant "norms and beliefs" policy, and tighten language governing access to buildings and grounds; motions were made, seconded and approved by voice vote.
The superintendent presented a revised checklist (procedure tied to policy JJH) for overnight and out-of-state student travel. The checklist emphasizes four priorities: clear educational purpose aligned to curriculum, 504/medical accommodations and school-nurse review, equitable financial plans (including fundraising and substitute coverage), and conflict-of-interest safeguards for travel vendors and organizers. Committee members supported using the checklist as an administrative tool to vet trips before they reach the full committee for approval.
The policy subcommittee recommended four separate first readings tied to recent legal guidance: IJR (challenge to instructional materials), IJL (library-material challenges), IMB (teaching controversial topics), and IHAM‑R (student exemptions from instruction on religious grounds). Members discussed practical application, turnaround timelines for challenges and the need for transparent processes for families and staff. The committee moved the items forward as first readings; votes recorded were for first-reading placement, not final adoption.
The meeting approved the minutes of Dec. 8, 2025 and passed the consent agenda (personnel memos, surplus materials, fundraising requests) before adjourning.
