Westonka Board holds organizational meeting: oaths administered and officers nominated

The Westonka School Board opened its organizational meeting with the administration of the oath of office for new or returning members. The chair asked attendees to rise and led members through the oath committing to support the U.S. and Minnesota constitutions and to "discharge faithfully the duties" of a school board member for Independent School District No. 277.

Following the oath, the board approved the organizational-meeting agenda by voice vote. The chair called for nominations for officer positions. Gary Waller nominated himself for board chair; Heidi was nominated and seconded for vice chair; Lauren was nominated for clerk though she was not present; Rob Harrison was nominated and seconded for treasurer. Board members congratulated the nominees. The board approved the consent agenda and adjourned the organizational portion of the meeting by voice vote.

The chair then called to order the regular January meeting, which the board approved by voice vote and used to make announcements about committee schedules (Facilities Committee Jan. 14; Teaching and Learning Jan. 23; Finance Feb. 5; Policy Feb. 9 before the regular meeting).

Why it matters: Organizational meetings set the board's officers and meeting rhythm for the year; the nominations clarify who will preside and who will handle clerical and treasurer duties going forward.

What’s next: Officers will assume responsibilities for the year; committee meetings and a retreat in February were announced on the calendar.
