Proposal for panel to study Red Dye 40 and additives draws mixed support

Senate Bill 6-39 would establish a committee to study the health and safety impacts of Red Dye 40 and other food additives sold in New Hampshire. Senator Donovan Fenton said the panel would review scientific evidence, consult stakeholders and help plan responsible implementation should federal or other jurisdictions move toward bans or labeling requirements.

Fenton noted other countries have taken steps to restrict synthetic dyes and that a state study could prepare New Hampshire for potential federal action. "I think this legislation creates a responsible forum for legislators and experts to work together to evaluate credible evidence," he said.

Representative Yuri Polozov, who holds a master's in biology and serves on the House Health committee, supported forming the study group and cautioned that carcinogenicity claims depend on exposure and concentration. "Sometimes we need good sound science being discovered and followed," he told the committee.

Committee members asked whether the state should ban additives outright; sponsors urged a cautious approach and recommended a study to understand impacts on small businesses, schools and consumers before pursuing bans. The committee closed the hearing on SB639 without further action.
