Residents press Lee County Commission on records, trash monopoly and local events

Several residents used the commission's public-comment period to press for transparency and to invite commissioners to local events.

John Sophocles asked the commission to "put it on social media, give us links and stuff to respond," urging that the public-comment notice for agenda item 7a be posted so residents could review and submit input.

Judy Lockhart invited the board to a community celebration in the hamlet she identified as "Loca Poca, Alabama," praised commissioners for their assistance on a local project, and thanked municipal partners and staff.

Lance told the commission he had filed four public-records requests and said he received only one full response. He asked for certified copies or sworn affirmations of several recordings and documents he described as "censored public comments" from dates in 2023 (03/27/2023, 04/24/2023, 07/31/2023 and 08/28/2023) and named county recipients who, he said, had copies that were not provided to him. He asked the commission to address the records discrepancies.

The commission heard the comments but took no immediate formal action on records or the trash service criticism during the meeting.

Next steps: The public-comment period for the solid waste plan will begin Dec. 15 and residents may use that opportunity to submit related concerns; separate follow-up on the records requests was not recorded.
