Committee approves neighborhoods amendment specifying patio signage and 'dogs allowed' language

The committee approved a neighborhoods code amendment that standardizes signage for restaurant patios and includes specific language indicating whether dogs are allowed.

Staff explained the Neighborhoods Amendment will require planning to set the final sign size (minimum 8 by 10 inches), provide copies of approved applications and permits to the state as required by Florida statute, and correct scrivener's errors. Past President Salem proposed an amendment to require specific verbiage — "Dogs allowed on patio" — and that the sign be posted at all patio entrances and the main building entrance; he cited parks department signage as a model.

Laura Marston from the Office of General Counsel advised the committee to avoid overly prescriptive language in the ordinance and suggested requiring a sign designating that dogs are allowed on the patio and specifying posting locations. Salem insisted on specific wording; the committee took a voice vote, the Salem amendment passed, and the neighborhoods amendment passed as amended. The committee approved the amended neighborhoods amendment by recorded voice vote and then a ballot with 7 yeas, 0 nays on the amended item (20250866).

OGC will be given leave to refine language consistent with the committee's intent before final drafting.
