The Rules Committee voted to approve a resolution supporting nomination of the Main Street Bridge to the National Register of Historic Places (item 20250881).
Past President Salem asked whether historic designation would restrict renovation; OGC clarified the National Register nomination is largely honorific and does not impose city regulatory controls, and the owner (FDOT) retains authority over maintenance and repairs. Council member Matt Carlucci described the bridge as an iconic city symbol — used on promotional and event logos — and urged the committee to begin the nomination process.
Committee members expressed support and added cosponsorships. The committee recorded a vote of 7 yeas, 0 nays; the resolution passed and staff were asked to work with FDOT and historic planners to proceed with the nomination process.
