Board approves routine items; superintendent to propose streamlined review of 37 book challenges

The Francis Howell R‑III board approved routine procedural motions at the start of its Jan. 8 meeting, including adoption of the meeting agenda and approval of negotiation/facilitation services from Peggy Cochran. The actions were recorded as voice votes and passed.

Later in the meeting Superintendent Delaney briefed the board on recent book‑challenge activity. "There are a total of 37 books at different levels requested for formal review by, review by, 1 district patron," Delaney said, adding that organizing 37 individual review committees would be impractical.

Delaney told the board he will present a recommendation at the Jan. 15 regular meeting that keeps the spirit of the current board policy and regulation (recorded in the transcript as '63 41') but allows an initial review outside of 37 separate formal committees to manage the volume of requests.

Delaney also told the board that next week's meeting will include proposed tuition rates for early‑childhood programs and continued plans for full‑day preschool. No board action on the book‑review recommendation or tuition rates was taken at the Jan. 8 work session; Delaney said formal items will be brought to the regular meeting next week.

The board chair closed the session by thanking staff and presenters and indicated the staffing plan would return for formal consideration on Jan. 15.
