Commission approves $11,950 jail refrigerator replacement and $44,005.60 retrofit for roadside truck

At its Dec. 8 meeting, the Lamar County Commission approved two maintenance procurements: a replacement for a failed jail refrigerator compressor and a retrofit of a roadside herbicide truck.

Sheriff Marty Gotwell told the commission the refrigerator’s compressor had failed, the unit was old and ‘‘beyond economical repair’’ because replacement parts were obsolete. The sheriff presented a bid of $11,950 from Triangle Air and Electric to replace the unit; commissioners approved the bid and characterized the expense as a capital improvement for the jail.

The commission also opened bids for modernization and retrofitting of a roadside herbicide truck. Staff discussed a retrofit proposal from IBM Solutions priced at $44,005.60 as an alternative to buying a new truck (which commissioners referenced as costing in the neighborhood of $100,000). Commissioners said funding for the retrofit had already been isolated in prior work‑session discussions and voted to set the bid and proceed.

Both actions were moved, seconded and approved during the meeting. Commissioners noted the retrofit would reduce recurring contracted bush‑hogging costs and extend the service life of existing equipment.

Next steps: department staff will complete contracted work and return any required status or reporting to the commission as needed.
