At-a-glance: Jan. 7 Barnstable School Committee votes on calendar, staffing and capital feasibility

The Barnstable School Committee took a series of formal votes on Jan. 7, approving calendar, personnel and capital items in unanimous votes.

Key outcomes at a glance:

- 2026–27 School Calendar: Motion to approve Option A (recommended start Aug. 31) carried unanimously after staff emphasized logistical, contract and instructional considerations. The board noted survey feedback (~200 respondents) favored a pre‑Labor Day start.

- Program of Studies: Committee unanimously accepted the Barnstable High School program of studies for 2026–27 (see separate article for full course additions and reductions).

- Restore BCIS Special Education Position: Motion to restore the Barnstable Community Innovation School special-education teacher from 0.5 FTE to 1.0 FTE passed unanimously; the restoration will be partially offset by not filling a paraprofessional role.

- Roof feasibility appropriations: The committee re-approved motions to appropriate $350,000 for feasibility/schematic design and project management for potential roof replacement projects at Barnstable High School and $350,000 for Barnstable Intermediate School. The votes included standard language acknowledging that the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) grant program is discretionary and that the town would be responsible for any costs beyond any MSBA grant award.

- Accounts payable: Members approved FY26 Warrant #27 in the amount of $453,867.79.

All motions that involved appropriation or transfers followed required municipal wording; the committee and town council previously coordinated with MSBA staff and will submit certified votes by MSBA deadlines.
