The Eagle Pass Zoning Board of Adjustment unanimously approved a sign variance on Monday that will allow three signs for a Home2 Suites at 3386 East Main Street, one more than the two ordinarily permitted under the city's zoning rules.
Interim community development director Guadalupe Negrete explained that the hotel—identified in the record as Home2 Suites—seeks one freestanding sign at the entrance and two signs affixed to the building. Negrete summarized relevant ordinance provisions, including an aggregate maximum sign area of 250 square feet per legal lot and rules governing freestanding and attached signage. "So what Home2 Suites is trying to do, they're trying to add one more sign outside of what our ordinance allows," Negrete said, and added that staff "would recommend approval" in this case while the city works on an ordinance amendment to reduce repetitive appeals for sign approvals.
Board members confirmed the location and type of each sign. One member observed the requested layout is similar to a previously approved hotel and that an additional sign on a large building posed no apparent design conflict. After brief discussion, a member moved to approve the variance; another member seconded the motion and the board voted unanimously to grant it.
The board did not attach special conditions to the variance in the record. Staff noted the city is working on broader signage ordinance amendments to avoid bringing similar requests to the board repeatedly. The board closed the public hearing and the motion passed with no recorded dissents.
