Guardian recounts Honor Flight visits that helped his Vietnam veteran father reconnect

Anthony Johnson, who served eight years in the Army and 13 years in the Navy, said his experience as a guardian for Honor Flight Central Florida helped his Vietnam War–era father reconnect with memories he had long kept private. "He absolutely loved it, changed his whole perspective on the homecoming itself," Johnson said, describing his father’s reaction at the memorials.

Johnson told Operation Outreach host Fred Robinson that he first learned about Honor Flight through Paula Edwards, whom he described as a retired Army colonel active in Orlando organizations, and signed on to be a guardian after his first trip. "After I did my first honor flight, I was hooked," Johnson said.

Johnson said the visit to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial — "the Wall" — was particularly powerful because his father, like many Vietnam veterans, had not received public recognition upon returning home. "It just brought closure to him," Johnson said, noting his father teared up and emerged from the experience more outgoing and communicative.

He described another striking moment at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, where he watched fellow veterans display visible emotion during the changing of the guard. "The tears coming down as they see the changing of the guard … it's just impactful," Johnson said.

Johnson said the trip altered family dynamics: he and his father began speaking and visiting more often, and his father started encouraging his buddies to apply for Honor Flight. Johnson has served as a guardian on four Honor Flights and said accompanying veterans from World War II and the Korean War reinforced his commitment to the role.
