City unveils 'Future Leaders' pilot to introduce local youth to municipal government

The Oroville City Council heard an overview of a new youth civic engagement initiative called the Future Leaders program and accepted the information.

The pilot will select seven junior-high and high-school students through an open application reviewed by an executive committee. Sessions are scheduled Mondays from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m., begin Feb. 9, and include department presentations, behind-the-scenes tours, hands-on activities and a mock city council meeting to conclude the cohort.

Staff said the program aims to build civic knowledge and career awareness; participants will receive completion certificates and recognition at a council meeting. The presenter said students are expected to provide their own transportation, and the application packet will include liability waivers and photo releases.

Council members supported outreach to local school districts, charter schools and Table Mountain School to encourage a diverse cohort by geography and socioeconomic background. Several council members also suggested exploring follow-up mentoring, internship or volunteer pathways so students remain engaged after the pilot.

What’s next: Staff will distribute application packets, begin outreach to schools and accept applications for the pilot cohort. The executive committee will select participants and staff will report back after the pilot to evaluate continuation or expansion.
