Policy panel backs retitling homeless-student rule, recommends broader interpreter services

The Niskayuna policy committee reviewed a set of student-support policies on Jan. 6 and recommended renaming policy 71-31 from “homeless children and youth” to “education of students in temporary housing,” saying the updated Erie 1 language better reflects current nomenclature and McKinney-Vento terminology. Tim, who led the review, said the district’s existing policy struck a balance between needed guidance and unnecessary length and proposed a limited title change and uniform renaming throughout the document.

Committee members also recommended a substantial revision to policy 72-11 to broaden its scope from serving only hearing-impaired families to covering interpreter services for parents and guardians more broadly. Tim said he shared replacement language with district staff and invited communications staff to help ensure the change also captures written communications and digital platforms. A communications representative noted platforms such as the district website and ParentSquare already include translation features.

Members said they would check related policies for overlapping language and asked staff to circulate revised text. The committee agreed the title update and the broadened interpreter language would be brought forward to the board as a first read after final wordsmithing.
