Board approves short extension of Chester Gap paid EMS funding while counties seek resolution

Following a lengthy public safety committee briefing and public comment from local fire and rescue representatives, the Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors approved a supplemental appropriation on Jan. 5 to extend support for the Chester Gap paid EMS program through April 6, 2026.

The extension — recommended by the county’s public safety committee — is intended as a short, bridge funding step to permit time for (1) discussions with the newly seated Warren County board about their willingness to re‑commit funding, and (2) development of contingency operational plans by county emergency‑services staff should Warren County not resume support.

Board members described the measure as a pragmatic, though imperfect, stopgap that allows emergency providers time to plan. Supporters noted Chester Gap contributes significant volunteer and local revenues (the department also channels donations and EMS cost‑recovery earnings into operations) and that automatic‑aid and cross‑county response patterns make simple boundaries impractical during emergencies.

The motion passed with a voice vote after a motion to approve the appropriation and a second; the board required that the item return on the February and March regular‑meeting agendas for review and potential re‑evaluation before the April 6 deadline.
