Commissioners honor late community leaders; one commissioner announces retirement

Commissioner and staff remarks during the Jan. 6 Baldwin County Commission meeting focused on community tributes and personal announcements.

Several commissioners and speakers remembered Clarence Bishop, a former county commissioner and longtime pecan farmer from the Barnwell community who died Dec. 27 at age 93; speakers recalled his roles, including early leadership in the Alabama County Commission Association (ACCA). Another community leader, Dennis Daska, from Central Baldwin, was also remembered after a recent battle with cancer. The chair later noted the death of Clarence Burke of Baldwin County Sewer Service and thanked first responders for holiday-period responses to serious incidents.

In a notable personnel announcement, a long-serving commissioner said he will not seek re-election and intends to retire next November after nearly 20 years as an elected official and 30 years as a county employee. He reflected on county projects and improvements cited in the meeting record, including the Beach Express, Live Oak, a county purchase of a 'mega site' that he said later attracted a large manufacturer, and other infrastructure accomplishments.

Speakers also thanked staff and volunteers for the county's Bicentennial Park holiday light display, noting volunteers staffed the event across multiple nights. The chair asked for prayers for the county archives director, who is scheduled for extensive surgery on Jan. 9, and mentioned a constituent named Cliff currently hospitalized in Lee County.
