Committee plans RFP for tree-cutting on Simmons Pond parcel; resident asks about impact-fee workshop

Speaker 1 said the city plans to issue a wood-cutting RFP for a roughly 30-acre parcel near Simmons Pond to reduce wildfire risk and generate revenue. Several committee members urged involving a professional forester to protect wetlands buffers, ensure correct merchandising and secure best pricing. “Timber harvesting is great. Just make sure that it's aligned with the…buffer area around wetlands and stuff,” Speaker 5 said.

Speaker 6 noted the Arbor Commission has not reviewed the parcel and recommended that Theresa, a licensed forester on the commission, be asked to evaluate the site. Members discussed recreational use of the trails and the need to avoid letting an unvetted logger remove trees without a clear management plan.

In public comment, a resident (Speaker 7) asked about an impact-fee workshop; Speaker 1 said impact fees will be part of an ordinance-reform plan expected in February and noted short-term rental registration/regulation will be discussed as well.

Next steps: staff will issue the RFP, involve forestry expertise and bring the parcel to the Arbor Commission for review; staff will schedule ordinance-reform discussions including impact fees in February.
