Richard Schaeffer sworn in as Babylon supervisor; deputies and town officials also take oaths

Richard Schaeffer was sworn in as supervisor of the Town of Babylon at the board’s Jan. 5 meeting, pledging to “uphold the constitutions” and to “faithfully discharge” the duties of the office.

Schaffer opened the event by thanking community leaders, union representatives and town employees and by stressing a cooperative approach to local government. “We’ve gotten more done in the last year,” he said, adding that the town will continue priorities such as maintaining fiscal stability and supporting local services.

County Executive Ed Romaine praised Schaffer’s leadership and cross‑party work before Schaffer took the oath. “This man is a leader. This man puts the people he represents first,” Romaine said in brief remarks.

The board also administered oaths to Antonio (Tony) Martinez as deputy supervisor and councilman, Anthony Mineta as a town councilman and Jerry Compitello as town clerk. Martinez said it is “the privilege of my life to serve this amazing community,” and Mineta said one of his focuses will be supporting small businesses and cutting red tape to help local chambers of commerce.

Schaffer noted the board would hold a short organizational meeting immediately following the ceremonial portion and invited the public to refreshments arranged by local restaurants. The board then moved into the formal meeting agenda.

The swearing‑in set the board’s tone for the year, with officials emphasizing public service, continuity of operations and partnerships between town government and county officials.
