Council approves Ferguson Funeral Home use-on-review for crematorium at 804 W. Utah

Ferguson Funeral Home asked the City Council to approve a use-on-review to operate a human crematorium at 804 West Utah. Applicant representatives described the crematory equipment as a dual-chamber system (primary chamber reaches roughly 1,800°F with a secondary chamber to oxidize residuals), noted compliance with federal emissions standards and explained local outreach to neighbors and letters of support in the packet.

Council members asked technical questions about emissions control, removal of pacemakers and other nonhuman items prior to cremation, required setbacks and how visible the stack would be to neighbors. Funeral-home representatives and staff said the device would meet Oklahoma regulatory standards (and federal air-quality requirements), that pacemakers and other appliances are removed before processing and that the stack would be modest and could be visually disguised. Staff confirmed the planning commission unanimously recommended approval and that required licensing by the Oklahoma Funeral Board and building permits remain to be completed.

Council approved the ordinance on a roll-call vote (majority yes; Councilmember Burris recorded a no). The approval allows the funeral home to proceed with building permits and state licensing steps required before operation.
