Council adopts four-way stop at Walnut and Claiborne after sight-distance and speeding concerns

Goldsboro’s City Council voted unanimously on Jan. 5 to adopt an ordinance establishing a four-way stop at the intersection of Walnut Street and Claiborne Street.

Traffic staff presented a study noting that the intersection met the council-adopted sight-distance criteria, though crash data was limited; staff also reported a speed trailer and a citizen petition supporting traffic-calming measures. Councilmembers representing the district said residents had reported accidents and speeding and asked staff how the new control would be monitored to avoid spillover problems such as increased speeds on adjacent streets.

Traffic staff said the city will install the stop signage and continue monitoring speed and crash data; staff also noted the city can accept petitions for additional study if residents in other corridors request traffic-calming measures.

Next steps: Public Works/Traffic will install signage and monitor the corridor; council asked staff to return with any necessary additional measures if speeding or crash rates do not improve.
