Sumner County schools near completion of athletic projects, district outlines timelines

Director of schools Doctor Langford told the Sumner County Board of Education the district’s athletic projects are nearing completion and outlined timing for remaining work. “So athletic facilities is about 97 percent complete,” Doctor Langford said, adding that specific campuses are at varying stages: Hendersonville’s practice field and related work were described as roughly 85 percent complete; Merrill High’s tennis courts are about 47 percent finished; and Gallatin’s stadium work is roughly 59 percent complete.

Langford said the district prioritized stadium structural and underground work before finishing ancillary buildings and noted that some tasks depend on weather and curing requirements. He said press-box foundations are completed and erection could begin in about four to six weeks, and that track surfacing must be installed when daily temperatures are consistently above 55 degrees to ensure the surface cures properly.

The director framed these projects as part of a longer-term approach to campus utility and access: where campuses are constrained, work is being organized to add multipurpose spaces and shared facilities that can serve athletics, training and community use. Langford also said steel shipments for stadium structures were expected in March, subject to supply-chain timing.

Board members did not vote on construction decisions during the update; subsequent agenda business moved to budget amendments and routine motions. The board asked for follow-up and asked the director to continue providing progress updates as weather, material deliveries and budget factors evolve.
