Michael P. Cahill sworn in for seventh term; vows balanced budget and civility

Michael P. Cahill was sworn in as mayor of the City of Beverly on Jan. 5, 2026, at an inauguration ceremony at Beverly High School where he pledged to prioritize respectful governance and to produce a balanced city budget for the next fiscal year.

Cahill, who took the oath of office administered by City Clerk Lisa Kent, used his inaugural address to thank longtime city staff and volunteers, note the city's quadricentennial and acknowledge the Naumkeag/Pawtucket people. He outlined a set of priorities that included maintaining high-quality city services and public education, investing in infrastructure, addressing housing affordability and acting with urgency on climate-related issues.

The mayor signaled a tight fiscal outlook, saying the city's financial forecasting shows that "projected revenues fall well short of our projected expenditures" for the next operating year beginning July 1. He said the city would pursue efficiencies and additional revenue sources including grants, state aid, economic investment and local taxes to build and pass a balanced budget.

On civic tone, Cahill said Beverly has not been immune to "instances of disrespectful and dehumanizing language and actions" and said he would lead with respect for employees, volunteers and residents. He closed by thanking family, supporters and staff and by recommitting to serve the community in the coming term.

The inauguration included musical performances by Beverly High School ensembles, a presentation of colors by the Marine Corps Junior ROTC and an invocation and benediction from local faith leaders. A light lunch reception was announced after the ceremony.
