Marshall County to oppose reclassification of Bridge 231 after IDNR nomination

DLZ told the board that Bridge 231 (Center Street) received notice from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and had been nominated to the National Register of Historic Places. The firm said INDOT will prepare a memo that could reclassify the structure and that the Indiana Bridge Preservation Review Board would consider the nomination on Jan. 14, 2026.

Commissioners expressed concern that an historic reclassification could make repairs more expensive or complicate replacement. An unidentified commissioner said the designation would likely raise costs and make modification more difficult: "I don't see any value to the public in making this landmark," the speaker said, and moved that the county oppose the reclassification and ask DLZ to prepare the appropriate paperwork. The motion passed by voice vote.

DLZ will prepare a response for the county to submit to the Review Board and INDOT; staff indicated the letting date for the associated project may be revised in light of the nomination and that the county will address timing in its next quarterly report.

Next steps: DLZ will draft and file the county's response and the board will monitor INDOT and Review Board actions. Commissioners discussed the fiscal and scheduling implications for planned bridge work but did not adopt a formal budgetary change at the meeting.
