Residents press board over superintendent media appearances and focus on growth vs. proficiency

During public comment Russell Davis and Willie Harmon challenged the board on clarity of superintendent duties and asked whether public communications and referendum commentary were authorized by the board.

Russell Davis said he reviewed the district website and superintendent job responsibilities and found predominantly subjective language; he asked the board to identify objective performance standards tied to student proficiency rather than growth metrics. "We don't talk about academic proficiency," Davis said, urging clearer standards the board can hold the superintendent to.

Willie Harmon said he had researched superintendent roles and expressed concern about frequent press conferences and commentary on referenda, asking whether the superintendent had board authorization for such public statements and saying he was "watching" board oversight and adherence to Robert's Rules of Order.

Board members acknowledged the comments; the speakers did not request immediate board action but urged the board to examine evaluation language and communications protocols. No formal change to the superintendent’s evaluation or communications policy was made at the meeting; board members indicated the board asks questions, challenges administration and will continue oversight.

The administration responded in the meeting by reiterating support for superintendent leadership and noting that surveys show strong staff support for administration. The board did not take any votes tied specifically to the public comments during this session.
