Resident criticizes several library titles; district outlines review and challenge process

During public comment at the Manheim Township School Board reorganization meeting, resident Mark Deaner read explicit passages from multiple titles and urged the district to remove them from school libraries. Deaner named The Handmaid's Tale (Margaret Atwood), Monday’s Not Coming (Tiffany Jackson), Perks of Being a Wallflower (Stephen Chbosky) and others, saying they are not appropriate for the listed grades.

A district speaker responded that library materials are selected "based on the judgment and the process from trained professionals," and outlined that selections use a multi-point evaluation that includes internal staff and external association review, with attention to appropriate age ranges and subject matter. The speaker also reminded the public that there is an established process to formally challenge materials and encouraged use of that process rather than reading graphic excerpts during public comment.

Board policy 903 (public comment) and related district procedures were referenced during the exchange; the district did not announce any immediate removal or administrative action during the meeting. The board said follow-up would be provided if needed and that the formal challenge process is the pathway for requests to remove or restrict materials.
