Madison County commissioners honor late commissioner, swear in two local officials

The Madison County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution honoring the life and public service of longtime Commissioner James Arthur Wilson and swore in two new officials during its Dec. 15 meeting.

The board read and approved the resolution recognizing Wilson’s decades of local service, including his 32‑year career as a railroad conductor and roles in civic organizations and local government. The chair read the resolution and commissioners voted to approve it.

The board then moved to fill a vacancy in County Commissioner District 1, position 1 and nominated Latina Mercer. Mercer was sworn in during the meeting and told commissioners, “It is an honor to be able to fulfill my father’s term.” She said she was proud to represent the district her father served for 42 years.

Separately, commissioners nominated Jeffrey Lake for constable, District 1, position 1. The nomination received a first and second, no other nominations were offered, and the board approved his appointment by voice vote; the chair congratulated Lake.

The appointments and the resolution were announced during the meeting’s regular agenda and took place by motions from commissioners and unanimous consent procedures where noted.

The board moved on to rezoning and other business following the swearing‑in ceremonies.
