Nash County commissioners adopt revised code of ethics after brief procedural dispute

The Nash County Board of Commissioners voted Dec. 8 to adopt a revised code of ethics and updated rules of procedure after a contentious discussion about transparency and review processes.

County legal staff presented updated documents the board had been reviewing since November. Commissioner Howell moved to postpone adoption so the changes could be shown in a redline comparison and reviewed by a committee; that motion failed. A follow-up motion to accept the county attorney’s recommended version of the code of ethics passed. The board then considered and approved the updated rules of procedure.

Commissioners expressed differing views about process and transparency. Some asked that future revisions include tracked changes or side‑by‑side comparisons, while others said the attorney’s process had been timely and that changes had been circulated appropriately for review.

The board’s action adopts the attorney‑proposed ethics language and rules of procedure; staff said the documents would be attached to the county policies and procedures and circulated as required.
