The Marion County Commission reconsidered planning commission appointments Dec. 22 after several commissioners said an at‑large member had not been asked whether they wished another term.
Commissioner S6 said the member at‑large "had the ability to serve another term" and that the board should have asked whether the incumbent wanted to continue. Commissioner S3 moved to rescind the Dec. 1 appointment of Evan Yoder to the planning and zoning at‑large position; the motion was seconded and taken up in discussion.
Commissioners debated process and fairness. Commissioner S2 noted the county historically had few contested at‑large appointments and had moved forward when applicants were available. After discussion, S3 moved to reappoint Derek Belton to a new three‑year term beginning in January; that motion was seconded and carried by majority vote.
The board also voted to change its practice going forward: new at‑large applicants will be presented for an initial viewing and acted on at a subsequent commission meeting to allow full board consideration.
The commission did not identify any formal disciplinary action; the appointments were handled by motion and vote as recorded.
