Preservation commission asks for same funding to support 250th‑anniversary projects

The Winneshiek County Historic Preservation Commission asked supervisors to keep its funding level the same as last year and outlined plans tied to the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary.

A commission representative described plans for a one‑day workshop to convene local history organizations (historic preservation groups, genealogy societies and historic site stakeholders) and a barn‑tour booklet scheduled for publication in the spring. The commission asked for $2,000 to support those activities, with $400 set aside for education and $200 for office supplies.

Officials also said they plan to digitize a county listing of historic sites compiled by a local league in the 1930s and to add markers at about eight Ho‑Chunk–related sites after a grant from a German art museum. The commission noted past outreach success (a recent event with 117 attendees) and offered to supply copies of new publications to supervisors when available.

Board members asked procedural questions about approval of the CLG (Certified Local Government) report and copies for supervisors; the commission said a draft report will be finalized and that they will process any motions in January as needed.

No formal vote on the request was taken at the meeting.
