Cheyenne applies for state funds to buy 8.37 acres for new affordable apartments

The City of Cheyenne has applied to the Wyoming Business Council for funds to purchase 8.37 acres northwest of the Converse and Carlson intersection to support new affordable rental housing, Dr. Mark Rene said in a November update.

The parcel sits across from recently built apartments north of the Walmart. In the council member’s description the development will include a mix of units: 46 one-bedroom, 92 two-bedroom and 46 three-bedroom apartments. The project is described as targeting lower-income households with incomes roughly between $42,000 and $58,000 per year.

Dr. Rene said the city must provide a 25% local match equal to $725,000. He said that match would come from $500,000 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds and a $225,000 gift from Related Digital, a new data center company locating in Cheyenne. The speaker described the gift as specifically intended to support affordable housing.

The update did not include formal project documents, a developer name, a construction schedule, or approvals beyond the funding request. It did not include a recorded vote or motion on the request; the report described the application as submitted to the Wyoming Business Council.
