Elkhart adopts honorary street-name program with $200 fee, five-year sunset

The City of Elkhart Board of Public Works on Dec. 22 approved Resolution No. 25R-23 to establish an honorary street-name program administered by the mayor’s office.

Megan Erwin, chief of staff, said the program allows residents to petition to honor an individual or event with up to two honorary street signs. “They can qualify for up to 2 street signs,” Erwin said, and the program sets a $200 fee per sign. The resolution includes a five-year sunset on the designation; after five years a sign would expire unless the requester actively seeks extension.

Erwin said the program will go through a committee review process and that, following Board of Works approval, the program fee will be presented to the City Council for final approval. The board voted to approve the resolution.

The board recorded no public comment on the item; staff will bring the fee structure to council as the next step.
