Board adopts new video game design course to broaden CTE participation

Petaluma City Schools approved a new video game design course after staff described curricular goals to broaden participation in computing and creative technology.

Staff said the existing regular computer‑science class has about 32 percent female enrollment while the AP computer‑science class is about 45 percent female; in contrast, staff presented data suggesting interest in video‑game design is closer to a balanced split (roughly 54/46). The presenter said the redesigned course emphasizes creative elements such as art, sound and design to attract a more diverse student population.

Teachers at Petaluma High have been promoting the course in classroom visits; staff reported that active promotion increases both overall enrollment and female participation. Trustees who raised concerns about the course title and perception said the revised curriculum and outreach work addressed those concerns.

The board moved to adopt the video game design course and the motion carried without opposition.

Next steps: Course will be implemented at the schools indicated in the curriculum packet and staff will monitor enrollment and diversity outcomes.
